Description
ARTIST TALK - Collecting Memories by Tawny Maclachlan
Join us as for the first in a series of artists talks that will take place here at Free Spirit Gallery.
We welcome Tawny Maclachlan for a talk about her newest projects and her series of photographs currently up in the gallery based on her instagram collection of over 2500 captured over the last few years. The pieces create connection with both fibre art practice, and her background in both Dance and Music. The pieces are only printed once so as not to take away from the fleeting nature of both their subject but also the process of collecting these macro views for inspiration.
Textile art, which I have spent much of my career as an artist creating, takes a long time. Turning ideas into viable concepts, and those concepts into reality, into pieces of art that will grace a studio, a gallery, or a home, requires weeks, months, sometimes even years. So part of my daily sustenance as an artist, especially after a long day spent in my studio on Gabriola stitching and creating textile art, is to head outdoors into the environment of the Coast Salish world, to walk and feel the earth, to observe what nature is doing and the patterns it shows me, and to receive what it gives back to me in ideas and memories. - Tawny
